Startup Showcase: Sierra Space Industries – Revolutionizing Commercial Space Transportation

Exploring Sierra Space's cutting-edge space transportation technology and its impact on the future of space exploration.

Sierra Space Industries is a pureplay commercial space transportation technology company that is changing the game in the commercialization of space. With over 30 years and 500 missions of space flight heritage, the company is leading the way in space transportation innovation, building platforms to enable the future of space travel and benefit life on Earth. The highlight of Sierra Space’s portfolio is the Dream Chaser® spaceplane, the world’s only winged commercial spaceplane that is set to launch in 2023 on a series of NASA missions to the International Space Station.

Building the Future of Space Transportation

Sierra Space’s Dream Chaser spacecraft is a reusable and flexible spacecraft that can safely carry cargo and eventually humans to on-orbit destinations, returning to land on compatible commercial airport runways worldwide. Unlike the traditional capsule-style spacecraft, Dream Chaser has a fully automated flight system and wings that provide greater flexibility in terms of payload and landing destinations, making it more cost-effective and efficient.

The spacecraft has a length of about 9 meters, a wingspan of 7 meters, and can launch vertically on top of an Atlas V or Vulcan rocket. It can carry more than 5,000 kilograms of cargo to low Earth orbit and returns to Earth with the same precision and control as a piloted airplane. Dream Chaser is also being designed to support low-Earth orbit (LEO) crewed missions and long-duration stays in space, paving the way for future human space exploration.

Creating Destination for Life in Space

In addition to Dream Chaser, Sierra Space is developing an array of in-space destinations for low-Earth orbit (LEO) commercialization. The company is building LIFE™, a three-story commercial habitation and science platform that offers a flexible, scalable environment supporting various applications such as microgravity manufacturing, space tourism, and research and development. LIFE is designed to be the building block for creating an orbital economy, providing a platform for the growth of new industries and business opportunities in space.

Orbital Reef – Sierra Space’s Vision for a Sustainable Space Economy

Sierra Space is developing Orbital Reef, a mixed-use business park in LEO, in partnership with Blue Origin, another commercial space transportation company. Orbital Reef is designed as a hub for commercial space activities, offering support to a range of businesses and organizations to conduct research, manufacturing, and other activities in space. At the center of Orbital Reef are Dream Chaser and LIFE, which serve as key components of the park’s infrastructure. The project is expected to be operational by the end of the decade and could provide various promising opportunities for the future of space commerce.
